Blackpool’s Hayley Colwell scored a stunning one-two in the Blue Chip Novice Open Championship today. Drawn first to go with her 2011 Dodson & Horrell Novice Open Champion Zidanne, Hayley had a tentative first ride on the Jazz sired gelding but still put up a strong score of 72.30%. Two and a quarter hours later, she entered the arena with Astrid Bolton’s six year old stallion Furst Kiss and pulled out all the stops to inch ahead on 73.68% and eventually the win.

A proud Astrid commented; “He really tried his hardest today so I’m very pleased. He’s taken a bit of maturing – he’s grown about four inches in the last year – since he contested young horse classes but he now shows real cadence. “ By Furst Piccolo, the horse combines competing with his stud duties; “Dressage is his hobby!” Astrid declared and his first crop of 20 foals are due this year.

Celebrating a recent sponsorship contract with Day Son and Hewitt, Hayley reports her second placed ride Zidanne is an interesting character. By Jazz, stables aren’t really his favourite thing, far preferring to spend 22 out of 24 hours a day in the field! But she believes in his talent; “It was tough going first on him and I rode cautiously, maybe too much so. I have both of them in the Elementary Restricted on Sunday so will go for it then!”

Statistics of Breedings in 2003 to Westfalian Licensed Stallions

April 6, 2004
The "Reiter und Pferde in Westfalien" magazine published the statistics of the 2003 breedings to Westfalian licensed stallions. These figures are highly interesting if you want to know what the latest breeding trends are. 2003 breeding leader is the dressage sire Fürst Piccolo with 286 breedings. Last year the Westfalian studbook registered approximately 6600 breedings in total to Westfalian licensed stallions.

Leading sire is Furst Piccolo, a 1997 born liver chestnut stallion by Fidermark x Mephistopheles, standing 16.1 hh. Furst Piccolo was a premium stallion at the NRW main approval in 1999 and won the 100 day test in 2000 with high scores. His crop of foals were sold at the Munster Elite auctions for top prices.

Furst Piccolo's sire Fidermark was the vice champion of the NRW approvals in 1994 and won the Warendorf state stallion performance test with a big margin in 1995. Further successes followed in 1996. He dominated the "Optimum of Westphalian Riding Horses" sovereignty in Munster. He also became the Buneschampion in his home town of Warendorf. He then went on to win the LVM stallion championship in Munster Handorf. He has had many wins in the Prix St George and Intermediaire I under Marlies Van Baalen and he is trained by Johann Hinnemann. In 2003 he made his debut successfully at Grand Prix.

His first foal crops produced sensational foals. They dominated the Westphalian Foal shows and the NRW elite foal auctions. In 1998 his first approved son Fein Sinn won the 100 day test, the first of several including the impressive moving Fuerst Piccolo. He has over 15 licensed sons and many state premium mares to his credit already. He is a sire who will dominate German breeding for many years to come. He is ranked highly on the FN breeding values list. The dam sire Mephistopheles, a son of the Trakehner Mackensen derives from a Romadour II mare, establishing a blood connection to the paternal side via Rheingold. Mephistopheles sired the performance test winner Jacquare. Rembrandt in the third generation was a performance test winner with Trakehner blood.

Fuerst Piccolo was a premium stallion at the NRW main approval in 1999 and won the 100 day test in 2000 with high scores. He is an amazing moving stallion and his first few foal crops have dominated the Westphalian elite foal auctions
